What is PRP Therapy?
Also known as a Vampire Facial®, the Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP facial is a very popular facial rejuvenation procedure. It’s based on the natural process of cell therapy, in which PRP is instinctively activated to mend and regenerate new tissue when an injury occurs. Applying the same concept, the PRP facial implements the extraction of PRP from a patient’s own blood, using it to restore a more youthful appearance to the face and counteract the signs of aging. PRP therapy can also be used as a hair restoration treatment to restore thinning hair in men and women suffering hair loss.
The PRP facial is designed to improve the overall appearance of the face and treat:
- Volume loss
- Dull and lackluster skin
What should I expect during the PRP Facial procedure?
Typically taking between 15 and 45 minutes, the PRP facial is performed under local anesthesia to minimize pain. Most patients experience little to no discomfort.
Right before the procedure, blood is drawn from the patient’s arm and processed in a centrifuge, which separates the PRP from other components. The PRP is then placed into a micro-needling device comprised of tiny needles that will activate a natural healing response. The machine is run all over the face creating micro-injuries on the upper layer of the skin while depositing the PRP into the microscopic punctures, stimulating regeneration and new collagen for up to seven days following the procedure.
Optimal results may be obtained with one to three treatments. During your PRP consultation, Dr. Taki will recommend the number of sessions needed to obtain your desired results.
Since PRP is not a drug and comes from the patient’s own body, the FDA has no regulations imposed on it. Devices for the preparation of PRP, as well as substances that may be combined with your PRP, should be FDA cleared. So, when scheduling with another doctor, make sure to confirm these two factors.
When will I see the PRP Therapy results?
What can be achieved with a PRP facial? Firmer, younger looking skin with reduced fine lines and wrinkles. Final results can be seen in 4 to 6 weeks with the effects lasting as long as two years.
