Lift Drooping Breasts

March 2, 2017

Dropping breasts are a result of aging and cannot be avoided, especially for women with larger breasts. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure that removes sagging loose tissue from the breasts to bring them back to a perkier state.

Am I the Right Candidate?

Breast lifts can be undergone by anyone who wants to improve the shape and contours of their breasts. When the areola is below the natural crease of the breast, when the breasts sag and have a more linear shape than a round one, this is when women choose a breast lift.

For a breast lift surgery, patients are advised to stop smoking a few weeks before the surgery. A general medical evaluation, along with the cessation or introduction of certain medications, might also be recommended. Herbal supplements, for example, have to be stopped a few weeks prior to the surgery, as they increase internal bleeding.

Patients are also advised to arrange for help with day-to-day activities and to modify their work schedules to fit in recovery time. A breast lift generally has a recovery period of about two weeks. This time period will vary case by case.

Apart from aging, some of the factors that lead to drooping breasts include the following:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic factors
  • Constant weight fluctuations

The Types of Breast Lifts

There are different types of breast lifts available for patients depending on the expected results. Your options may include an anchor breast lift (full mastopexy), lollipop breast lift, crescent breast lift, and donut breast lift. All of these procedures are named after the shape of the incisions made during the procedure. While the anchor breast lift is the most comprehensive, it is also the most invasive. The crescent lift has minimal post-surgical marks but creates the least amount of improvement. Breast lifts can also be combined with numerous other procedures, like breast augmentation and liposuction.

The Procedure

During a breast lift, the patient is sedated using general anesthesia. The surgeon makes surgical markings to mark the areas of incision based on the chosen type of lift. Once the incisions are made, the breast tissues are reshaped and removed as necessary. If the areolae are enlarged, then the surgeon will reshape them as well. In most breast lift procedures, the areolae and the nipples are repositioned to be higher. Once satisfactory results are achieved, the incisions are closed.
The Best Options for Your Recovery Process

During recovery, the patient’s incisions are covered with dressing and bandages. Patient are also advised to wear a support bra or elastic bandage to provide the necessary support for healing breasts and to minimize swelling. Specific instructions about recovery including activities to be avoided, medications to take, and proper posture will be given by the doctor. Patients are expected to strictly follow these instructions in order to get the best possible results.
