Hair thinning and loss affects tens of millions of people across the nation, both men and women. This common concern can be a source of self-consciousness for many individuals, but that doesn’t mean they have to live with a receding hairline. NeoGraft® from our extensively trained plastic surgeon can help restore your hair without obvious signs of treatment. If you’ve noticed changes in your hair thickness or have already experienced recognizable hair loss, we may be able to help. As a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive approach, NeoGraft® offers a wide range of benefits, including natural-looking results. What is NeoGraft® and how is it different from other methods?
Most traditional transplant surgery techniques take a section or strip (graft) of hair from the donor location (the back and sides of the head) and use it to create smaller follicular units that are then transplanted into the thinning area. This leaves behind a linear scar that can be noticeable if hair is worn relatively short—as many people do. FDA-approved NeoGraft® harvests hair using a very different method. This innovative device takes individual follicular units of around 1-4 hairs, which the surgeon can then strategically and artistically place in the treated area for a more natural appearance. As a result, there are no linear scars and most patients have no visible scarring at all. Furthermore, recovery is often quicker using this approach as there are no scalpels, sutures, or staples needed.
Who is a good candidate for NeoGraft® hair restoration?
Your safety, comfort, and results are our highest priorities, so we will review your medical history and evaluate your anatomic needs prior to recommending this procedure or suggesting another that may offer you a better outcome. If there is evidence that your hair loss is caused by a medical concern or another treatable cause, we can provide advice on how to address the underlying issue first to see if that will restore your hair. Our board certified plastic surgeon will discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and go over your options during your initial consultation, at which point he will develop a customized treatment plan.
What is the procedure going to be like?
Because of the unique harvesting process, most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. You will be able to relax, listen to music, or watch a movie, as well as use the restroom as needed during treatment. After the extraction is complete, we will wash and dry your hair and you can return home the same day. We recommend taking a few days to heal, and we will provide post-operative instructions to best ensure that you have an optimal recovery experience.
How long until I see results?
Hair restoration is a gradual process, primarily because it requires waiting for your own natural hair to grow in. We simply move some of the hair from the donor section of your head (this area, located on the back and sides of the head, is chosen as the hair follicles are permanent and continue to grow throughout life) to the thinning section. Two to three weeks after your procedure, the transplanted hair will fall out—which is perfectly normal and to be expected. Three to four months later, new hair will begin to grow in. Most hair on the head grows at a rate of about ¼” per month, so your patience will be rewarded with a little time. You should see the final results of the treatment in about 18 months, although you will likely notice improvement before this point.
Are there limitations on how I can wear my hair?
One of the many benefits of NeoGraft® hair restoration is the freedom to wear your hair as long or as short as you like. Since scarring is almost completely invisible, you can wear your hair in a buzzcut if you prefer! And once the outcome is complete, you can wash your hair, swim, wear hats, change your hairstyle, and more. It’s your own hair; you can wear it however you like.
What will the scars look like?
No Hair Transplant Surgery is completely scarless; however, the scars left behind by this technique are tiny. When a follicular unit is harvested, a smaller than 1 millimeter mark will likely be left behind. Each harvested graft will require this small puncture-like mark, and the tiny pin-point incisions are naturally dispersed throughout the donor zone for the least conspicuous outcome. We will be happy to show you before-and-after photos to develop a better idea of what to expect from this treatment and what can be achieved.
