What Is a Cell Saver?

A cell saver is a medical device that collects, cleanses, and returns lost blood to the patient during or after surgery. Unlike traditional transfusions using banked blood, a cell saver machine allows patients to reuse their own red blood cells, promoting better healing and reducing the risk of complications. Studies show that autologous blood transfusion (using your own blood) leads to better oxygen delivery and improved patient outcomes compared to donor blood.

How Does a Cell Saver Machine Work?

During surgery, the cell saver machine is placed in the operating room and connected to the patient via thin medical tubes called cannulas. These tubes collect blood lost during the procedure, separating it from unwanted fat and tissue through centrifugation (high-speed spinning). The purified red blood cells are then reinfused into the patient either immediately during surgery or later in recovery if needed. This process can restore up to 80% of lost red blood cells, helping the body heal more efficiently.

Cell Saver vs. Banked Blood: Why It’s Better

While blood bank donations are an option, using a cell saver to recycle your own blood offers several advantages:

  • Higher Blood Quality – Your own blood is fresher and more compatible with your body.
  • Faster Recovery – Red blood cells from a cell saver function normally upon reinfusion, unlike banked blood, which can take time to regain full oxygen-carrying capacity.
  • Lower Risk of Complications – Reduces exposure to potential infections or immune reactions from donor blood.
